Of Space Pilots & Sex Clubs

Jaine Diamond

If you’ve started reading my debut erotic romance novel DEEP or have already devoured it, you may be wondering the same thing many readers ask me about how I came up with this very different love story.

So here it is. The truth is that a sexy story set in space has probably been percolating somewhere in the back of my mind ever since I watched Battlestar Galactica a few years back. I’m a sucker for a uniform, and all the pilots and the military hierarchy just seemed to cry out for an erotic adventure. (If you aren’t familiar with Battlestar Galactica or don’t consider yourself a sci-fi fan, Portlandia did a hilarious segment on exactly how addictive this TV series is. Find it on YouTube!)

Somehow the sexy pilot thought cross-pollinated in my brain with another thought: Exit to Eden—in space. Anne Rice’s Exit to Eden is a book about an exclusive BDSM club on a remote island, and for some reason (don’t ask me why!) I was intrigued by the idea of something similar set in space. Suddenly I was itching to write this story, because I was dying to read it—and to know where it would lead!

I played with the idea of a remote, military-run space station infamous for its active BDSM culture. But what intrigued me much more was the idea of my main character, Lana, arriving at this station for military training amid wild rumors of erotic hazing rituals and sadomasochistic games, only to find the rumors seemingly overblown, the days of kink in the past… and only then, for her to be drawn into this secret, sexy world through her attraction to her mysterious commanding officer.

And there you have it: DEEP was born!

I truly hope you love Lana and Catch like I do—it was incredibly fun to write their story, and I wrote it from the heart. I’d love to hear your thoughts on DEEP, so please reach out to me if you have something to say!

Until then, happy reading!
